Was Morales in Valencia - August 2002

Bernadette Nelson's article 'Was Morales in Valencia? New light on the origins of the Missa Benedicta es, caelorum regina,' in the August 2002 issue of Early Music looks at the biographical implications of what appears to be an early state of Morales's Missa Benedicta. Only the second superius part survives, included in a little-studied partbook now held in Barcelona. Headed 'misa valencia de morales', its existence suggests the idea that Morales stayed in Valencia during the 1530s and sheds new light on the composer's stylistic development and initial concept of parody technique.
