Our values

At Oxford Journals, we share the values of our society partners because we are part of the scholarly community. Our mission is to ensure that high-quality research is as widely circulated as possible in order to support education, research, and scholarship. To achieve this, we focus on:

• Quality
• Service to the academic community
• Journal development
• Global dissemination
• Appropriate innovation
• Fair play
• Transparency

Commitment to the academic community
As a university press, we have no shareholders to satisfy. This means that we can devote ourselves entirely to our society partners and work solely on your behalf, returning any profit to the academic community through journals reinvestment and society payment.

Customer focus
We firmly believe in the concept of fair play and conduct our business to exacting ethical standards. We treat all parties involved in the publishing process—societies, authors, readers, librarians, and other providers—with utmost respect and efficiency.

We have instituted author-friendly policies such as post-print archiving and exclusive licensing, rather than copyright assignment, to meet the needs and expectations of our authors.

Expanding access to information
At Oxford Journals, we look beyond the bottom line to the expanding horizon of journals publishing. Our focus on information quality and dissemination reinforces Oxford University Press’s mission to achieve excellence in research, scholarship, and education by publishing worldwide. To this end, we were among the first publishers to make our online content freely available to over 60 of the world’s poorest countries. The content of many of our journals is made freely available after suitable embargoes, set by the owning society.

In addition, many of our journals have adopted optional open access models to give authors the choice to make their article completely open access from the point of publication.
