OPEN ACCESS OPTION FOR AUTHORS

SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS

From 1st March 2008: please see the NEW online submission instructions here.

Articles must be submitted in English. The length of the text should not exceed 4000 words. Please include a brief summary of about 300 words, together with no more than four 'key' words to aid literature searching. Due to the heavy pressure to publish high quality articles the total article must not exceed 4500 words. Please state clearly on the article the total word count. Over-length articles will not be considered.

The Editorial Office will correspond directly with authors on the acceptability of their papers. Authors may not submit manuscripts that are under consideration for publication elsewhere.

Manuscripts must be submitted online via http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com/hpi

REFERENCES

References should be listed at the end of the main text using the Harvard system, whereby the surname of the author and year of publication of the reference are used in the text. The list of references should be in alphabetical order of surnames. References by the same author(s) should be in chronological order.

References should be cited in the text as 'Reports by Author (Author, 1989) have confirmed...' or '...as reported earlier (Author and Author, 1985; Author et al., 1998)'. Do not place text other than the author and date within the parentheses. The normal form of listed references is author's surname, initials; year in parenthesis; article title; journal name in full, volume number and page numbers. For example: Bunton, R. and Macdonald, G. (eds) (1992) Health Promotion: Disciplines and Diversity. Routledge, London.

Online references should be cited as in example 1, below. Please see examples 2 and 3 for papers that have been published online in more than one version. The initial version of a paper published in this way can be cited by the Digital Object Identifier (doi) but, if available, the reference should also include the citation of the final version. Authors should check all references carefully, and in particular ensure that all references in the Reference section are cited in the text. Note that multiple references or page spans under one number are not allowed. Personal communications, unpublished results, manuscripts submitted or in preparation, statistical packages, computer programs and web sites should be cited in the text only, NOT included in the References section. Accession numbers may be cited either within the text or in the form of a reference.

The following rules should be followed:

  • The sentence should begin: ‘This work was supported by …’
  • The full official funding agency name should be given, i.e. ‘National Institutes of Health’, not ‘NIH’ (full RIN-approved list of UK funding agencies) Grant numbers should be given in brackets as follows: ‘[grant number xxxx]’
  • Multiple grant numbers should be separated by a comma as follows: ‘[grant numbers xxxx, yyyy]’
  • Agencies should be separated by a semi-colon (plus ‘and’ before the last funding agency)
  • Where individuals need to be specified for certain sources of funding the following text should be added after the relevant agency or grant number 'to [author initials]'.

An example is given here: ‘This work was supported by the National Institutes of Health [AA123456 to C.S., BB765432 to M.H.]; and the Alcohol & Education Research Council [hfygr667789].’
