'Browse by JEL code' information page

Articles from Oxford Journals economics titles are classified according to the system used by the Journal of Economic Literature (commonly known as 'JEL codes').

JEL codes are submitted by the article's authors; the codes are displayed on the print article, usually after the abstract, and are used to build a 'Browse by JEL code' listing on the journal's website.

The list of journals offering the "Browse by JEL code" feature is shown below. There are some things to note:

  • "Official" three-character JEL codes ([A-Z][1-9][0-9]) are used. Two- or four-character JEL codes are normalized to the three-character equivalent. If you are an author, you can browse the hierarchy of JEL codes on any journal below to find the most suitable JEL codes for your article.
  • JEL classification may not begin until part way through a journal's archive. The date at which JEL classification starts for each title is shown below. Items such as editorials and book reviews are not assigned JEL codes.
  • Articles appear in the Browse by JEL hierarchy when they are published in an issue, not in Advance Access. We are working on changing this: until then, JEL codes for Advance Access content are searchable via our search engine (sort results by newest).
