Database Description

The Mouse Phenome Database (MPD) is a web-accessible community data repository and platform for data analysis and in silico hypothesis testing for the laboratory mouse. The Mouse Phenome Project is an ongoing effort to collect phenotypic and genotypic data from inbred strains of mice and their derivatives. As part of a community effort, researchers submit strain characteristics data for inclusion in MPD. Detailed protocols and environmental conditions are required and are posted on the website. Data are formatted and annotated to maximize the value and utility of the data. Data sets are accessible for downloading or for online analysis using MPD visualization and analysis tools. Statistics are computed for each data set, and graphical and tabular summaries are available. Tools are provided to compare strains, find compelling correlations between measurements, and identify mouse models. In addition, MPD houses a large collection of SNPs (also generated by members of the community and large genotyping consortia). SNP tools are offered for custom retrievals with filtering options based on data source, strain, genomic location, and gene annotations. MPD tools are available to help link phenotype and genotype.

Electronic access to centralized strain data enables biomedical researchers to choose appropriate mouse strains for many systems-based applications. Currently MPD contains over 900 phenotypic measurements (includes pending data) and SNP alleles for ~ 10 million genome-wide locations. MPD facilitates research that uses the mouse to identify and determine the function of genes participating in normal and disease pathways.


The Mouse Phenome Database is supported by The Jackson Laboratory and NIH HG003057, HL66611, and MH071984. MPD data are available through projects funded by 35 funding agencies.
