Social Forces joins Oxford University Press

4 August 2011

Oxford University Press (OUP) is pleased to announce that the global leader among social research journals, Social Forces, is to join its publishing programme.

The journal emphasizes cutting-edge sociological inquiry and explores the intersections between social research and psychology, anthropology, political science, history, and economics. The journal is published in partnership with the Department of Sociology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. It was founded in 1922 by pioneering sociologist and social activist Howard Odum.

Howard Aldrich, Chair of the UNC Department of Sociology said: “The Department of Sociology at the University North Carolina at Chapel Hill is delighted that Oxford University Press has become the official publisher of our journal, Social Forces. The decision to move to OUP was a result of many years of deliberation about the best publishing arrangement for Social Forces to ensure the continuation of its historical standing as a top tier journal.”

Arne Kalleberg, Editor of Social Forces, continued: “With its international presence and status as a leading publisher of social science journals, OUP is a great fit for Social Forces. Together, we are confident that Social Forces will achieve its ambition of being the leading international general sociology journal in the world.”

Niko Pfund, President of OUP, Inc., said: ““We are delighted to be working with Social Forces, especially given the journal’s strong history and its promising trajectory as a major social sciences resource.”

The journal will be included in the Oxford Journals Digital Archive from 2012, making all issues from volume 1, issue 1, available online to Archive customers. The first issue published by OUP will be September 2011, Volume 90, Issue 1.
