Oxford Journals: Mobile Optimized

1 September 2011

Oxford University Press is pleased to announce the delivery of mobile-optimized websites for its full range of journals websites, powered by the HighWire Press electronic publishing platform. All Oxford journals now have a mobile-optimized version of their full website that can be accessed via multiple mobile devices.

“Mobile-optimized websites for our journals allow academics, students, and researchers to access the content they need from virtually anywhere via their smartphones”, noted Charlotte Capanni, Head of Academic Journals Marketing at Oxford University Press. “Mobile optimization also enables users to look up a reference quickly or access the latest articles published in their favourite journal.”

“HighWire’s flexible, web-services oriented Open Platform enabled us to roll out 250+ OUP mobile sites within a short timeframe”, said Tom Rump, Managing Director of HighWire Press.

Users logging in through an institution's WiFi service will be able to access that institution's subscriptions; individual subscribers will be able to access subscriptions through username and password authentication.

The mobile web interface offers the following features:
• View current, advance access and archived content
• A mobile-friendly quick search page
• Email forwarding functionality
• Personalization and authentication sign-in options
• Clearly identified journal branding
• Streamlined display for small screens and low-bandwidth networks

Charlotte Capanni went on to point out, “In addition to this core mobile-optimization service, device-specific apps will be developed on a case-by-case basis for journals that wish to reach a specific mobile user base”. The mobile-optimized sites currently support iOS (iPhone and iPod Touch), BlackBerry OS, and Android smartphones. Support for Symbian OS and Windows Mobile is in development.
