Programme Details
The presentations given at the conference will be as follows:
Day 1, Thursday 29 March
Collection Development - A Strategic Approach (Developing Collections in an Academic Research Library)
Ian Snowley
This presentation will look at the process of documenting, defining and refining the collection development policies of a major academic research library in the UK. The presentation will cover the process of identifying the format for the library’s collection development profile/policy; discuss issues such as terminology, scope, level of description, inclusions and exclusions; and describe the process of consultation that will be used to inform the content of the final collection development policies.
Collection Management - The Practical Approach
Jill Taylor-Roe
This presentation will outline the Information Resources Strategy developed and applied at Newcastle University Library in the UK. It will consider how Librarians can determine the optimal balance between print and electronic resources; make decisions between purchasing more current e-journal collections or digital backfiles; and how to prioritize requests when the demand for available resources is significantly greater than the funds available to purchase them. It will also consider how to ensure that users understand what librarians are doing, and can readily find the resources that they need.
Digital Preservation - Past, Present and Future
Martin Richardson, Johan Stapel, and Ho Nam Choi
This presentation will look at several issues surrounding digital preservation, and their significance to libraries and publishers. It will review the process that Oxford Journals underwent to establish a strategy for preservation, and its participation in numerous leading initiatives. The presentation will also address the approach of the Koninklijke Bibliotheek (KB), the National library of the Netherlands, which stores the output of international scientific publishers to ensure its survival for future generations. It will describe in detail the KB archiving initiative, and also provide an overview of significant developments and major initiatives in the area of digital preservation. There will also be a detailed case study looking at the Korea Institute of Science and Technology Information (KISTI), considering the impact of digital preservation strategies, and how they may continue to evolve.
Day 2, Friday 30 March
Usage Statistics - An Introduction
Richard Gedye
This presentation will consider the value and importance of usage statistics to libraries, authors, and publishers. It will address the work of UK Serials Group and COUNTER in the advancement of consistent format usage reports, looking at the ways journal quality is assessed, and how this may develop in the future.
Usage Statistics - Practical Workshop
Jill Taylor-Roe
This session will outline the key performance indicators (KPIs) developed by Newcastle University Library to help us manage our electronic portfolios, particularly e-journals. It will provide practical examples of how we have utilised this data to inform decision making, and reflect on what we have learnt and where we feel we still need to carry out more work. It will also highlight the strengths and weaknesses of usage data, and illustrate how usage metrics contribute to our Information Resources strategy.
The city of Xi’an
The ancient walled city of Xi’an is the capital of Shaanxi province and one of the oldest cities in China. The city’s history reflects that of the Chinese nation: it served as capital of thirteen dynasties over the course of 3100 years, and was the oriental cultural centre of the Silk Road. Xi’an boasts a wealth of cultural and historical attractions, from the ancient Big Wild Goose Pagoda and the Terracotta Army (located to the east of the city’s suburbs) to the popular Tang Paradise theme park.
