Guide for Submitting Papers
Submission Requirements
1. Papers can be submitted online at http://oep.edmgr.com. If you have submitted papers to the journal in the past, or have refereed papers for us, you will already have a user ID and password. New authors should follow the instructions for registering on the home page.
2. Please follow the detailed instructions on each page when submitting your manuscript. An anonymous file must be submitted, but the names and affiliations of all authors of the paper must be given at the relevant stages of the submission. It is the responsibility of the corresponding author to keep Oxford Economic Papers updated with any change of address or affiliation.
When submitting their paper authors are asked to declare that they believe the work to make an original contribution to economics which has not been published elsewhere; that the paper is not under consideration elsewhere; that it will not be offered for publication elsewhere while under consideration at Oxford Economic Papers; and that none of the authors or co-authors have other work either published or under consideration elsewhere which significantly reduces the original content of the work submitted to Oxford Economic Papers.
The fact that a paper is available as a working paper or discussion paper does not disqualify it from consideration by Oxford Economic Papers. The editors recognize that there may be cases of doubt as to whether previous dissemination was a ‘working paper’ or a ‘full publication’ and welcome specific enquiries on this point prior to submission. Please contact us at oep@economics.ox.ac.uk. In any case, the authors are asked to state, in the submission process, any dissemination of the paper which might be regarded as a full publication on the web or otherwise. It is accepted that dissemination through RePEc, central bank, NBER, or IMF Working Paper series, for example, are not ‘full publications’, although other web-based series may be.
3. Ideally the paper should not exceed 8,000 words in length. The editors are unlikely to proceed with papers of 40 pages or longer.
4. An abstract of strictly 150 words or less should accompany the paper.
Processing Submissions
1. New submissions are first checked by the OEP Office. They are then passed to the Allocating Editor who will assign each paper to either a Managing or Associate Editor.
2. Some papers, whose prospects of being accepted appear slim, or which are not suitable for Oxford Economic Papers, are rejected on initial assessment by the Editor.
3. The remaining papers are sent to referees. The Editors usually approach two referees. Occasionally only one referee is consulted; and sometimes three referees may be appointed. Referees are asked to respond within six to eight weeks. They are not always able to meet this timescale, but we do aim to write to authors within three to four months of referees being appointed. If there will be a delay beyond this we will contact the corresponding author.
4. Authors cannot revise their submission while the paper is with referees.
5. Decisions on whether to reject the paper or invite a resubmission are based on a number of factors including referees’ reports.
6. It greatly assists us if authors quote their paper’s reference number in any enquiry to the OEP Office.
Revised Versions
1. Authors who are invited to prepare revised versions are asked to attach detailed responses to the referees. Papers are returned to the original referees who are asked to respond within 30 days. We aim to reach a decision on revised versions within two to three months.
2. Decisions on publication are taken by the Editors jointly at their regular meetings. Acceptance depends on several factors, including referees’ reports. The Editors’ decision is final.
3. Acceptances are conditional on the paper being published in the journal’s house style and on copyright being assigned to our publishers, Oxford University Press. A more detailed style sheet can be viewed here.
4. Final versions are submitted electronically. The papers are copy-edited by the journal office and sent to OUP. They are then published online prior to inclusion in an issue of the journal.
Editorial decisions cannot be conveyed to authors by phone and all correspondence on papers must be strictly through the OEP office or the online submission site.
