Special Issue
ALER Special Symposium Volume: Brown v. Board of Education
Publication date: August 2006
This special issue of the ALER, guest-edited by Orley Ashenfelter, focuses on the 50th Anniversary of Brown v. Board of Education Conference (Princeton University, October 7-8, 2004).
The articles in this issue were presented at a conference at Princeton University in October 2004 that focused on a variety of issues related to race and ethnicity in the US educational system today. Three of the articles study school desegregation including its effects on housing values and labour market outcomes. Others examine the racial gap in educational achievement at the beginning of elementary school, the continuing importance of race in neighbourhoods and the justice system, and whether affirmative action and other policies aimed at closing racial and ethnic gaps in educational achievement are effective or will be necessary in future.
