The University of Kentucky is seeking outstanding candidates at the Associate or Full Professor level with expertise in the area of biomedical informatics for the position of Director of the Center for Biomedical Informatics (CBI).

The University of Kentucky is prepared to commit significant resources for the successful candidate in developing the CBI. The CBI is a collaboration of multiple departments, centers and colleges, and of faculty from across the University with expertise in bioinformatics (genomics and proteomics), medical informatics, and public health informatics. The CBI will provide a service function, provide training and education in the field of biomedical informatics and be a nexus for all research and scholarly activities concerning biomedical informatics.

The Search Committee will consider candidates who are energetic, self-directed individuals with a record of achievement and commitment to excellence in both research and teaching. An MD or related professional degree with a Ph.D. or fellowship in Informatics or a related discipline is preferred. Candidates must have a specific research focus in an area related to biomedical informatics such as public health informatics, clinical informatics, bioinformatics or genomics, or translational informatics. Review of applications will begin on September 1, 2008 and continue until the position is filled.


Major responsibilities of the Director in the development of the CBI include establishment of a governance structure and a strategic plan to develop an ambitious research program within the Center. In addition, the successful candidate will lead development of an educational program in biomedical informatics, including graduate level courses and degree programs, a mentoring program for graduate students, pre- and post-doctoral fellows, and recruitment of appropriate faculty. The Director will report directly to the Vice President for Research and the Executive Vice President for Health Affairs.

The Chandler Medical Center is located on the campus of the University of Kentucky in Lexington, Kentucky. The horse capital of the USA, Lexington is situated in the beautiful Bluegrass region, and the city is a wonderful combination of college-town sophistication, natural beauty and southern hospitality.
