Diaspora
Volume 3, Issue 1 (June 2009)
About this issue
This special issue considers how migration has shaped contemporary women’s writing and illustrates how literature by women develops dominant debates about diaspora. The essays explore how gender affects the material experience of migration as well as the ways in which diaspora is conceived in gendered terms.
Covering a range of neglected and newly emergent writers, who are discussed alongside more established figures, the volume emphasises the diversity of diasporic experience and celebrates the international range of contemporary women’s writing. Authors discussed include Jamila Hashmi, Shauna Singh Baldwin, Buchi Emecheta, Edwidge Danticat, Leila Aboulela, Anita Rau Badami, Shani Mootoo, Yasmine Gooneratne, Hiromi Goto, and Jamaica Kincaid. Contributors include Susan Stanford Friedman, Sneja Gunew, Sandra R.G. Almeida, Susheila Nasta, and Claire Chambers.
