Manuscripts must be submitted online. JDH conducts double-blinded peer reviews. When uploading your manuscript it should include no identifying author information (designate as Main Document). Once you have prepared your manuscript according to the instructions below please visit the online submission web site. Instructions on submitting your manuscript online can be viewed here.

LENGTH:

As a rule, full articles should not exceed 6,000 words (endnotes and references will not be counted as part of this total). Longer articles will be considered on their merits. The typescript should be prepared in accordance with the instructions given below.

ILLUSTRATIONS:

Articles may be illustrated with black and white half-tone or line illustrations, or colour images, as appropriate to the subject matter; however, the publisher encourages colour images where appropriate and/or possible. From 2010 all colour originals will be reproduced in colour in both the online and the print edition of the Journal.

Figures must be saved as high-resolution TIFF files (at least 300 pixels per inch for photographs, and 1200 pixels per inch for black and white line drawings).

Permissions for Illustrations and Figures.
Permission to reproduce copyright material, for print and online publication in perpetuity, must be cleared and if necessary paid for by the author; this includes applications and payments to DACS, ARS and similar licencing agencies where appropriate. Evidence in writing that such permissions have been secured from the rights-holder must be made available to the editors. It is also the author's responsibility to include acknowledgements as stipulated by the partilcuar institutions. Oxford Journals can offer information and documentation to assist authors in securing print and online permissions: please see the Guidelines for Authors section at http://www.oxfordjournals.org/access_purchase/rights_permissions.html. Information on permissions contacts for a number of main galleries and museums can also be provided. Should you require copies of this then please contact the editorial office of the journal in question or else the Oxford Journals Rights department on journals.permissions@oxfordjournals.org.

KEYWORDS:

The current list of possible keywords is available here.

ABSTRACTS:

Authors are asked to provide brief synopses of between 100 and 200 words. These should be attached to the front of the typescript.

TYPESCRIPT LAYOUT:

Manuscripts to be uploaded for submission should be typed, double-spaced, on A4 format pages (8.5 x 11 inches). Ample margins should be left. Each page of the typescript should be numbered. In articles and review articles endnotes should be numbered consecutively and placed together on a separate page or pages at the end of the article. Full captions for all illustrations should be included with the submission. Endnotes should not be used in short reviews. Short quotations within the text should be marked by single quotation marks. Longer quotations should be inset from the main text and typed single spaced. All articles should be written in English; quotations from foreign language texts should be translated into English (where necessary the original text may be quoted in the endnotes).

It is the author's responsibility to obtain permission to quote from copyright sources.

REFERENCES:

References should be given sparingly. The titles of books and periodicals should be italicized, and should be set out as follows:

A. Forty, Objects of Desire, Thames & Hudson, London, 1986.

Articles should be referred to thus:

B. Gille, `Le premier appareil automatique au foyer: Le tournebroche', Technique et Culture, no. 3, 1980, pp. 179--85.

LICENCE TO PUBLISH:

It is a condition of publication in the Journal that authors grant an exclusive licence to The Design History Society. This ensures that requests from third parties to reproduce articles are handled efficiently and consistently and will also allow the article to be as widely disseminated as possible. In granting an exclusive licence, authors may use their own material in other publications provided that the Journal is acknowledged as the original place of publication, and Oxford University Press is notified in writing and in advance. You may download the Licence form here.

Oxford Open – Please remember that if you have chosen the Open Access option for your paper, you are required to complete an Open Access charge form online at http://www.oxfordjournals.org/oxfordopen/forms. ALTERATIONS:

Authors will be informed by email of editorial decisions and may consult their Author Centre for the current status of the review of their manuscript, including alterations requested and proofs. In cases where the Editorial Board has accepted a paper subject to revisions, the author will normally be asked to complete these by a specific deadline. To avoid delays in the production of the Journal, proofs should be corrected and returned within three days of receipt. Corrections should be limited to mistakes; no rewriting will be accepted. If the author's corrected proofs are not returned in time, the editor will be responsible for press.
