Virtual Issue on the Sociology of Education

European Sociological Review has a long and proud history of publishing research on the sociology of education. We have published work tracking inequalities in educational opportunity related to social background features such as class, ethnic background and gender. We have published comparative work which assesses the effect of institutions on educational attainment and educational inequalities. And we have published work which tests influential theories about how inequalities in educational attainment come about.

In this special virtual issue, we have brought together seven papers on the sociology of education from our archive. The articles were chosen to provide a taste of the work published in ESR, and we have therefore chosen articles which represent different traditions within the sociology of education. Some of the articles chosen for this issue are currently among the most-read articles that ESR has published, while others may now be read less frequently, but are still recognized as important contributions to the field.

We hope that this virtual issue inspires you to explore the other excellent articles on the sociology of education published in the European Sociological Review.
