Flowering Newsletter 2007

Editorial
FNL2007 begins with a review by Robert Sablowski of flowering and determinacy in Arabidopsis thaliana; this is an authoritative analysis of meristem maintenance and termination, and assesses the extent to which regulatory mechanisms may be conserved in other species. Esteban Bortiri and Sarah Hake then provide a paper on the same topic in maize. The greater emphasis here on inflorescence form reflects the wide variation in the impact of determinacy on this feature in the grass family. James Cockram et al. focus on flowering time in temperate cereals, providing a benchmark article on the topic and its importance for cereal breeding. In extreme contrast, and demonstrating the breadth of relevance of flowering, Richard Bisgrove then offers an assessment of the aesthetic importance of flower colour in the garden designs of Gertrude Jekyll. The collection of articles is completed with the FNL bibliography for 2006, the electronic form of which offers the opportunity to link directly to articles of interest. I would like to thank Tinashe Chiurugwi and Fiona Tooke for their hard work on this bibliography. The whole FNL2007 package is wrapped up in the cool beauty of Katinka Matson’s flowers. Enjoy!
