About this issue
The Oxford English Dictionary defines mathematics as 'the science of space, number, quantity, and arrangement' and sport as 'An activity involving physical exertion and skill'. All four mathematical elements feature in every sport, so this combination offers huge potential for applying abstract methods to resolve practical problems. In June 2007, the University of Salford hosted the First IMA International Conference on Mathematics in Sport. Subsequently, they invited formal contributions from delegates and others for this special journal issue.
