Information for Authors

Please note that the journal now encourages authors to complete their copyright licence to publish form online

Contributions and editorial correspondence should be sent to, and addressed to:

Journal of Islamic Studies
Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies
George Street
Oxford OX1 2AR

+44 (0)1865 278 745

Typescripts must be in English and should be approximately 10,000 words. Authors should not submit manuscripts that are under consideration for publication elsewhere. All typescripts will be assessed by academic referees. Authors are invited to submit contributions electronically as email attachments or on disk. Typescripts employing diacritics for transliteration should be submitted in hard copy as well, with an indication of the software used. Authors should reserve one complete copy of their typescript, as hard copies will not be returned in the event that an article is not accepted.

Please provide a title page indicating the article title, author's full name (in the form preferred for publication), and author's affiliation (including mailing address and email address). Typescript pages should be numbered consecutively. Spelling, capitalization, and punctuation must be consistent within each article.

Include copies of any figures or halftone illustrations within the typescript: do not submit original artwork. Upon an article's acceptance, editorial staff at the Journal will be in touch with information regarding how best to supply originals.

Tables should be comprehensible without reference to the text. Type each on a separate sheet and indicate the approximate position in the text with a marginal note.

All articles accepted for publication will be copy-edited and proofread. Copy-edited typescripts of articles and reviews will be sent to authors; this represents the final opportunity for authors to make corrections or amendments to their work, as proofs are not circulated to authors.

Foreign words accepted in English usage should be spelled in accordance with the New Oxford Dictionary of English or the Concise Oxford Dictionary. Other foreign words must follow the transliteration system shown in the table at the back of the Journal.

Article references should be numbered consecutively throughout and appear as footnotes. As Journal articles have no separate bibliographies, all references should contain name of the author, full title of book or article, place and year of publication, and page reference. Cited unpublished material should have full location reference. Book reviews do not have footnotes.

It is a condition of publication in the Journal that authors grant an exclusive licence to the Oxford Centre for Islamic Studies. This ensures that requests from third parties to reproduce articles are handled efficiently and consistently, and will allow the article to be as widely disseminated as possible. In assigning copyright, authors may use their own material in other publications provided that the Journal is acknowledged as the original place of publication and Oxford University Press is notified in writing and in advance.

Upon receipt of accepted manuscripts at Oxford Journals authors will be invited to complete an online copyright licence to publish form.

Please note that by submitting an article for publication you confirm that you are the corresponding/submitting author and that Oxford University Press ("OUP") may retain your email address for the purpose of communicating with you about the article. You agree to notify OUP immediately if your details change. Once your article is being processed for publication OUP will contact you using the email address you have used in the registration process.

All authors of Articles and Reviews receive free online access to their paper. Authors of Articles can claim twenty-five offprints of their Article free of charge, and Book Review authors can claim a free copy of the issue in which the Review is published. To claim these, and to purchase more offprints, please use the Oxford Journals Author Services site. The publisher will send the corresponding author a link to this. Orders from the UK will be subject to the current UK VAT charge. For orders from elsewhere in the EU you or your institution should account for VAT by way of a reverse charge. Please provide us with your or your institution’s VAT number.

Books for review should be sent to the editorial address given above.

Authors have the option to publish their paper under the Oxford Open initiative; whereby, for a charge, their paper will be made freely available online immediately upon publication. After your manuscript is accepted the corresponding author will be required to accept a mandatory licence to publish agreement. As part of the licensing process you will be asked to indicate whether or not you wish to pay for open access. If you do not select the open access option, your paper will be published with standard subscription-based access and you will not be charged.

Oxford Open articles are published under Creative Commons licences.
