Nutritional Epidemiologist, Tenure/Tenure-Track Investigator Position, National Cancer Institute (NCI), National Institutes of Health (NIH), Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS)
The Nutritional Epidemiology (NEB, Chief, Dr Arthur Schatzkin, http://www.dceg.cancer.gov/neb.html, a component of NCI’s intramural Division of Cancer Epidemiology and Genetics (DCEG), offers an outstanding career opportunity for a Tenured/Tenure-Track investigator looking to carry out original, independent, and innovative studies in a stimulating research environment.

NEB plans and conducts epidemiologic investigations, metabolic studies, and clinical trials to clarify the role of nutritional factors, including energy balance, in the etiology of human cancer. In addition to designing and conducting free-standing investigations, the successful candidate will be able to analyze data from and incorporate new projects within several on-going prospective cohort studies of nutrition, lifestyle, and genetics in relation to cancer. The successful candidate will also have substantial access to biologic specimens for investigating nutrition-related biomarkers, diet-gene interactions, genetic proxies for nutritional exposures, and nutritional co-factors in oncogenic microbial infection. There are substantial opportunities for methodologic investigations, including clinical and statistical studies of dietary measurement error, development of new assessment instruments, and evaluation of biologic markers of dietary intake and physical activity.

Qualified candidates must have an M.D. degree with epidemiologic training; Ph.D. in epidemiology with expertise and experience in nutritional epidemiology; or doctoral degree in nutrition, biochemistry, molecular biology, or related discipline with documented expertise in epidemiologic research. Candidates must have strong written and oral communication skills and a record of publications showing an ability to design, conduct, analyze, and interpret data from nutritional epidemiologic studies of cancer or other chronic diseases. Candidates must be sufficiently experienced to function independently, both in the development of their own research efforts and in the mentoring and supervision of more junior investigators. Senior investigators, including those with strong records of productivity and achievement who are interested in moving into an intramural research environment, are encouraged to apply.

Salary is competitive and commensurate with research experience and accomplishments, and a full Civil Service package of benefits (including retirement, health insurance, life insurance, and a Thrift Savings Plan) is available.
