Information for Authors
NOTES TO CONTRIBUTORS
New for 2010 – Please note that the journal now encourages authors to complete their copyright licence to publish form online
All correspondence concerning submissions and other editorial matters should be sent to:
The Mind Editorial Office Department of Philosophy University of York York YO10 5DD Tel: +44-1904-433257 E-mail: mind@york.ac.uk
All mail for Mind will go in the first instance to the Editorial Administrator, Dr Barry Lee, so communications intended specifically for the attention of the Editor should be clearly thus marked.
The Editor’s judgment will be conveyed to the author by the Editorial Administrator, so that complete anonymity can be preserved at all stages of the process. If the Editor’s opinion is that a resubmission is likely to be accepted this is indicated in a covering letter.
Submissions Articles: Papers on all aspects of philosophy, including its history, will be considered. Authors are encouraged to present their arguments in a way which makes them accessible to a broad readership among philosophers; where technical material is included it should be accompanied informal exposition of the argument. There is no limit on the length of papers but, other things being equal, shorter papers are preferred.
Discussions: Brief comments on work published in Mind (but not elsewhere) are welcome. In the case of acceptance, the original author will be invited to make a very brief reply to the reply, and normally the exchange will be closed at that point.
Submission Format The preferred mode of submission is by email attachment to: mind@york.ac.uk. Please include your full name, any affiliation, and the title of your paper in the body of the email. All submissions will be acknowledged by email.
Papers should be typed, double spaced, and include an abstract. They should be prepared for anonymous refereeing, with revealing acknowledgements and self-identifying references removed. If a cover sheet including identifying information is sent, this must be a separate document/file. Papers not prepared for anonymous refereeing will not be read.
The preferred format for electronic submissions is Portable Document Format (.pdf). Papers may also be submitted as Microsoft Word (.doc) or Rich Text Format (.rtf) files. Authors using symbols and other technical apparatus should either include the relevant fonts in the attachment or use a PDF file with embedded fonts.
Please ensure that electronic image files print at a legible size and are of a high quality for publication. For useful information on preparing your figures for publication, go to http://cpc.cadmus.com/da. You can also see our figure guidelines.
Papers may also be submitted by post in hard-copy to the correspondence address (above). In this case, two copies should be submitted; papers will not be returned. Authors are asked to note that hard-copy submissions will usually spend longer in review.
Accepted papers: Authors of accepted submissions will be asked to prepare a version of the article using the Mind house style and send it by email in a suitably formatted and encoded electronic version. Hard copy is also required.
Upon receipt of accepted manuscripts at Oxford Journals authors will be invited to complete an online copyright licence to publish form.
Please note that by submitting an article for publication you confirm that you are the corresponding/submitting author and that Oxford University Press ("OUP") may retain your email address for the purpose of communicating with you about the article. You agree to notify OUP immediately if your details change. If your article is accepted for publication OUP will contact you using the email address you have used in the registration process. Please note that OUP does not retain copies of rejected articles
Authors will receive one set of proofs, which will require immediate correction. Author's changes will not be accepted at proof stage.
The Publisher will supply 25 offprints free of charge. Authors also have the opportunity to purchase more at reasonable prices. Free offprints can be claimed, and further offprints purchased, at the Oxford Journals Author Services site.
Language Editing Particularly if English is not your first language, before submitting your manuscript you may wish to have it edited for language. This is not a mandatory step, but may help to ensure that the academic content of your paper is fully understood by journal editors and reviewers. Language editing does not guarantee that your manuscript will be accepted for publication. If you would like information about one such service please click here. There are other specialist language editing companies that offer similar services and you can also use any of these. Authors are liable for all costs associated with such services.
