Database Description

GeneTrees database ( is a phylogenetic window into the protein-coding genes in the fully sequenced genomes. The database contains homology models consisting of multiple sequence alignments and associated phylogeny inferences for all discoverable sets of mutually aligning proteins. A sequence may occur in multiple alignments which allows different views of the data to be shown. Currently, GeneTrees has two sections, one for prokaryotes with 325 taxa and one for viruses with over 1600 taxa. Future goals include providing automated calling of paralogous versus orthologous gene relationships based on comparison to consensus "species trees".
