CONSULTANT PHYSICIAN / RENAL SUBSPECIALTY

Applications are invited for the post of Consultant Physician / Renal subspecialty. This is a replacement position and the successful applicant will join a department of seven other Consultant Physicians who have subspecialty interests in Cardiology, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Respiratory and Rheumatology. The successful candidate will take part in a 1:6 on call rota with Registrar (the Renal Service is currently accredited for one year Advanced Trainee) and house surgeon support.

Taranaki is situated on the west coast of the lower North Island of New Zealand with a population of approximately 105,000. It is an area with outstanding scenery and is undergoing strong economic growth. It is an excellent and affordable place to live and raise a family, with first class educational facilities. The mountain to surf environment encourages outdoor living and recreational activities which are all available within minutes of New Plymouth, the provincial capital.

Taranaki Base Hospital, situated in New Plymouth, is a progressive regional secondary referral centre for the province of Taranaki with a wide range of medical specialties, an Intensivist-managed ICU, an HDU and a well equipped Radiology Department providing interventional radiology and renal related support, which includes digital radiology, MRI, CT and angiography.


The Renal Service is based in New Plymouth, with outreach services provided around the province. The Nephrology Service comprises of an in-centre haemodialysis unit, inpatient acute support, community peritoneal dialysis and transplant support.

TDHB is currently developing regional links with neighbouring DHBs, including a tertiary centre for clinical support, education and peer support. Provision of onsite visiting renal physicians will ensure additional clinical support for the incumbent.

Taranaki Base Hospital is about to begin an $80 million dollar redevelopment plan recently approved by the Ministry of Health. IT services are a priority and there is a strategic plan to innovate in the area of integrated information and technology.

The successful applicant should have comprehensive experience and training. Vocational Registration or equivalent qualifications recognised in New Zealand, such as FRACP with renal subspecialty. The Department of Medicine has a strong track record with education and training, and the successful incumbent will be expected to participate and contribute to the departments activities, including advanced trainee registrar teaching, audit and medical student teaching.

The position is available on a full-time basis. Applications will be considered from candidates wishing to work for a fixed term greater or equivalent to twelve to twenty-four months. Applications will also be considered from candidates currently in training posts seeking employment within twelve to twenty-four months. Salary will be based on the recent MECA settlement and will take into account equivalent positions in the country. Continuing Medical Education within New Zealand and at overseas meetings is actively supported through CME allowances of $16,000 pa. A comprehensive relocation package would be available to the successful candidate.
