1. SUBMISSION OF MANUSCRIPTS

Four copies of manuscripts, in English, should be submitted to the Editor at the following address:

Authors may not submit manuscripts that are under consideration for publication elsewhere. The preferred maximum length is 8000 words. Shorter articles can be considered, particularly for the Field Reports section of the journal. Authors will be notified of the editors' decision as soon as possible (normally within three months). Manuscripts are not returned.

2. PREPARATION OF MANUSCRIPTS

Manuscripts should be typed on one side only in double spacing. Pages must be numbered. Papers are submitted anonymously to at least two referees, so the author's name should not appear on the manuscript. Instead, a separate title page, with the author's name and affiliation as it would appear on publication, should be submitted. Footnotes should be avoided. Two levels of subheadings are used, the first in bold and the second in italic. Subheadings are not numbered or lettered. An abstract of 150 words is required.

3. DATES

Because of the dynamic nature of many refugee situations, authors are requested, when relevant, to indicate clearly in the text when fieldwork for the paper was carried out. At the end of the manuscript the approximate dates when the paper was written should also be noted.

4. TABLES AND FIGURES

These should be comprehensible without reference to the text. Each must appear on a separate sheet, with the desired position indicated in the text. For the style of tables and captions to figures, see sample pages. Figures should be submitted in a form ready for the printer, e.g. a good quality laser printout or black ink drawing.

5. REFERENCES

The Harvard System is used (see papers in an issue and examples below). All references must be listed alphabetically at the end of the paper.

Please note: A great deal of editorial time is spent correcting references when these are not prepared in the style of the Journal. The correct format is:

• Author's name (in capitals)
• initials
• date in brackets
• title
• place
• publisher.

Please ensure that all citations in the text appear in the list of references and vice versa.

6. QUOTATIONS

Quotations longer than two lines are indented. Where quotation marks are required, these should be single not double.

7. PROOFS

When a final version has been accepted for publication, authors will receive proofs for correction. No changes to content are permitted at this stage and alterations are restricted to correction of typographic errors.

8. COPYRIGHT

Manuscripts submitted will be expected to contain original work and should not have been published in abridged or other form elsewhere. It is a condition of publication in the Journal that authors assign an exclusive licence to Oxford University Press. This ensures that requests from third parties to reproduce articles are handled efficiently and consistently and will also allow the article to be as widely disseminated as possible. In assigning an exclusive licence, authors may use their own material in publications provided that the Journal is acknowledged as the original place of publication, and Oxford University Press is acknowledged as the Publisher.

Contributors of articles receive 25 gratis offprints of their contribution together with free url access to their paper. Authors will have the option to buy further offprints at reasonable prices. Journal of Refugee Studies authors have the option, at an additional charge, to make their paper freely available online immediately upon publication, under the Oxford Open initiative.
